Studio Art Senior Portfolio

A display that lets the viewer experience India but as an outsider, yet inviting the viewer in the same way as the Sensory Trip by letting the viewer know that Sada Bhera (our courtyard) does not belong to just one person but also the viewer.

This display is more of an experience than normal art that invites the viewer to get fully involved with the work and allow for thier senses to be evoked in such a way that the viewer feels teleported on a short trip to India as seen through my experiences and knowledge.

All of these works were finished (created) in Summer of 2012 or earlier. All placed on an external website focused on studio art.

This is a tribute made to mainly my mother but I feel anyone can connect with this work. The main things that I had in mind were to use use mirrors and other reflective or clear glass like surfaces to create a collage that looks like the one animal that is known for its beauty - a peacock. The national bird India that I felt related to the emotions that my mother is going through right now due to her illness. Please click to read further.

The focus of my senior art portfolio is the culture of India. I want to capture the culture I was born in and make it available for others. By evoking all of your senses this installation will help the visitor to transport themselves to the land that I was born in, perhaps even something close to the house I was raised in.

The work I am presenting is not made to copy what is found in India, instead is a combination of my own interpretation of multiple influences, weaved together to evoke things that can still be found in India today. I lived in India for ten years and then my family came to the States and I have been here since then. Over my twelve years in the U. S., I have been exposed to many cultures from around the world. As part of my artistic development during my time at Augustana, I have learned to think about some old things in new ways. This has led me to create some traditional art forms using new media and new methods without completely changing the tradition that comes with the art form.
